Commercial membranes have enabled the revolution of pressure-driven filtration in industries. However, these membranes have a major limitation in terms of their separation selectivity that cannot be changed during filtration. This limits the application of the membranes that can guarantee a stable performance. So far, there are no easy means to tune a membrane's performance if the membrane does not quite meet the process specification once it is in use. Therefore, new membranes are explored with the aim to allow tuneable separation selectivity. The introduction of conducting polymer (CP) for filtration membrane allows structural tunability upon acidic doping on the polymer backbone. Easy preparation of CP membrane particularly from polyaniline (PANI) can be used to externally control the separation properties in practical and economically feasible pressure-driven membrane processes and applications.
