Concentration and competition are two main aspects of market structure analysis in the banking industry that are widely discussed. The banking industry in most nations throughout the world has undergone significant changes as a result of many structural changes. Four main sources contribute to the structural changes in the Malaysian banking industry namely, bank mergers, implementation, and restructuring of the Islamic banking system, liberalization, and advancement in information and communication technology (ICT). Besides, the 1997 East Asian Financial Crisis and restructuring of the banking industry under the Financial Sector Master Plan have also contributed to the aggressive structural changes in the Malaysian dual banking system. Thus, the main purpose of this book is to investigate the impact of structural changes on the degree of concentration and competition of the Islamic banking system compared to the conventional banking system in Malaysia. The well-known structural approach namely, the structure-conduct-performance (SCP) paradigm is used to investigate the relationship between concentration and competition in the Malaysian dual banking system.
