Pulpotomy is a dental procedure that deals with the infection of the root canal mainly in deciduous teeth. The aims of the treatments are to remove the infected coronal pulp tissue and maintain the vitality of the remaining radicular pulp tissue. In order to achieve this, pulpotomy medicament is used as an agent to eradicate the bacterial infection, control the pain and bleeding at the site of injury and protect the underlying pulp tissue from future bacterial infection. Currently, available pulpotomy medicaments have several side effects such as being toxic to the pulp tissue, having poor antibacterial properties, causing staining to the tooth structure, and being costly. The utilization of extracts from plants and herbs in dentistry has been extensively studied with promising results. The extract of the Uncaria gambir plant is well known for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and astringent effects. It has been used as a traditional remedy in treating toothache and gum infections. The properties that these plants exhibit fulfill the criteria needed for a pulpotomy medicament. In this book, the cytotoxicity of the Uncaria gambir extract towards the cells and its antibacterial effects against oral bacteria were discussed. The potential of Uncaria gambir extracts as pulpotomy medicament is encouraging and with further research, we believe that it can be developed and commercialized as an effective, natural-based pulpotomy medicament.
