The study of manuscripts has been relegated by many to the days of orientalism and old philologists in the field. The study of society and politics have permeated area studies in many important areas today. Scholars believe that the study of society is more important than the study of texts.
Though this is a bit crude, the question remains:how do we understand society today? What tools can be used to conceptualize doctrinal issues within societies if we ignore textual and manuscript studies that outline the belief of a people? It seems that the study of society can be enriched further with insights from texts that are close to the society they play a role in.
In this book, apart from looking at manuscripts from a philological or codicological aspect, the scholars have enriched our understanding of culture and tradition within a particular society.
Influence of Sufi orders such as the Naqshabandis and the Chishtis are also viewed from the production of texts and influences the texts had played within the order in a certain geographical area under study by the scholars. Further research and openness towards the role of texts in society is needed to understand the complexities that make up the society.
This book would appeal to those who are interested to know more about philology, codicology and other scientific methods in analyzing manuscripts in addition to insights into the culture and society.
